Our First Days in Novi Sad, Serbia

By: Bryan and Catalina

After a 14 hour train ride to Belgrade, while Bryan was finishing his 14 hour flight from Philadelphia, Catalina met Alex and Bojan at the train station. They visited The Museum of Yugoslav History for a few hours before going to pick up Bryan from the Airport.

Around 4pm we arrived in Novi Sad, the second largest city in Serbia, built on the banks of the Danube, and bearing the marks of history on its buildings and streets. Our apartment is near the Petrovaradin Fortress and it’s nicely positioned for easy access to public transportation to the center of the city. We got all set up and organized our stuff and then we went out to get some food, water and other supplies we needed at the moment.

The next day we went to a nice restaurant and tried some traditional Serbian dishes, which are pretty different from what we had expected. People seem to enjoy meat a lot around here, from sausages to bacon, grilled and fried meat of various kinds. It tasted pretty good, but it is definitely not something we would eat everyday. Everybody recommends brandy or vodka along with that, and they are very proud of the various types of alcoholic drinks you can find in Serbia.

It was a really nice experience and we are looking forward to explore the city more than we have already. The weather will be great this week and we will try to take some more photos of the city, at night, from the bridge near by and learn more about these places. More updates coming soon.
